Money misappropriated by Lazarenko must be returned to Ukraine
The Cabinet of Ministers has instructed the Ministry of Justice to strive for the return of the funds, which Pavel Lazarenko, a former prime minister of Ukraine from 1996-1997, took out of this country illegally. To this end, 81 million hryvnias will be allocated from the national budget.
According to foreign minister Konstantin Grischenko, the drive for the return of the above funds was suspended when Viktor Yuschenko and Yulia Timoshenko, key figure in Lazarenko’s criminal machinations, came to power.
The amount of the funds, which Lazarenko transferred illegally to the United States, is estimated at $114 million. However, data from the United Nations shows that the sum of embezzlement committed by Lazarenko amounts to about $200 million or 0.4% of Ukraine’s GDP.
Readers of The Ukrainian Times know that Lazarenko will be released from prison on August 17. He serves a sentence in a minimum-security prison based in the town of Dublin, USA
Also, it is worth recalling that jurors of a San Francisco court found Lazarenko guilty unanimously on 29 charges against him. US authorities
accused the former Ukrainian prime minister of laundering $ 114 million in the United States, corruption and fraud.
